Today I rediscovered a moleskine notebook filled with my old shopping and wish lists from 2009. My taste has undeniably changed since then, so to speak. Be that as it may, I find it rather fun and enlightening to see how mon goût has progressively moved in the direction of my current taste. I am positive that my taste will remain somewhat the same for years to come, inasmuch as I can perceive that I’ve finally figured out my style and taste.
However, I want to share the aforementioned lists on my blog. The first one was dated March 2009. To put it bluntly, my approach to style was still fairly schizophrenic at that time. Yet some of the items on my lists are a tad embarrassing as they are far from in accord with my taste nowadays. Trust me, every list gets better with time.
Otherwise it’s nice to look back at my lists so as to sort out things in terms of wardrobe building and grasp why I need a lot of time to reflect before I settle for an item. The funny thing is that I can’t even recall wanting to acquire any of the items listed below.
- Beanie
I’m glad I never got my hands on a beanie as I subsequently found out that it’s not my style at all. I don’t know but I assume I was slightly influenced by the Alexander Wang mania at that point.
- Bowler hat
Purchased in London and worn a couple of times. I looked silly and forced. I’ve learned my lesson!
- Chanel-esque tights from Lindex
Why?
- Asymmetric cardigan à la Rick Owens
I abstain from anything asymmetric these days.
- White, slouchy tank tops à la Alexander Wang
Not exactly my top priority. I don’t even have white tank tops on my basics list.
I have nothing else to add but a good laugh!
hahaha, such a fun post. It's always fun to look back at how we were in the past and have a good laugh about it … like seeing embarrassing yearbook pictures! It's interesting how you mention that your old style was more schizophrenic … I can see how there wasn't a particularly clear vision in this old wishlist. However, your current list is much more coherent. You've definitely come a long way!
Nice photo.
it's probably smart that you kept the list…it's evidence of how your style has evolved and matured, and how well-edited your current wishlists and wardrobe are. also it can serve as a reminder for what not to buy.it's good when we can look at past desires with a wee chuckle!
It's weird sometimes my hats will work on me, and other times they don't.I think that's the fun of looking back on the teenage years, is laughing about all those crazy things we wore.
It's a cringe worthy time for sure but I'm glad I went through it just the same, just so I could grow out of it.
That's what I love about style- it emerges! It's so funny to look back and see how far you have come.A good laugh is so good for the soul (smile).
Hehe. All that was on that list was very trendy back in 09 from what i remember :)
Keeping your old wishlists is a great way to document a linear development of your style. I wish I still had copies of my lists. All I can remember is the excruciating period where I actually wore a CAP before my uniform of ballet flats & black slimfit jeans came into existence! http://herribbonsandherbows.blogspot.com/
I love my old wishlists – I used to illustrate them and fill whole pages with tiny drawings. Although I can wipe multicoloured tights off my list, most things have stayed the same. I've dressed the same for years and I think my half-nautical half-hippie style might be here to stay.
- S: Haha, so true! You missed out on my style evolution pt 2 post that I posted several months ago but deleted immediately.. I've never had as many styles within one year.- LuxeBytes: Agree!- Style Odyssey: You're right. I like looking back at my lists to see why certain items could never work and what not to buy!- Pret a Porter P: Haha, is there a particular hat that occasionally works?! It was fun experimenting but it gets tiring after a while and I'm happy with my current state of style.- L.L.: You said it! Yesterday I decluttered my wardrobe again and found some items from my experimenting era that I'm passing on to my soon-to-be teenage sister, so she can experiment without buying too much disposable crap.- Lindsay K: Yes! I'd love to hear about your style evolution as you sound as the most elegant and chic young lady out there :)- MyFavouriteThings: Ikke sant. I tillegg funker disse gamle listene som en påminnelse om å ikke hoppe på alle trender. – Fashion Tidbits: Yes, you're right!- Alexandra: Ok, what is a CAP? Are you referring to the hat?- Kate: Sounds like you've figured out your style then. I wish I could draw… on my lists, I had to write "as seen on" or "à la" in order to be specific, as I'm unable to illustrate.
Hahaha, bowlerhatt. Jeg hadde også det på ønskelisten min for et par år siden, men jeg er så utrolig glad for at jeg ikke kjøpte det. Fikk etter hvert prøvd en i dårlig kvalitet på Bikbok, og jeg så ut som et egg.
I know what you mean! Style evolves over time, my wardrobe certainly has (for the best I hope!)
Hahaha, I did get those Chanel-esque tights, and I do wear them from time to time. They attract a lot of attention, but are difficult to wear without looking like a harlequin :)
Among the things in my autumn list I had colorful tights like purple ,olive green elastic belts, purple glovesand a couple of skirts!Plus cropped cardis.I'm out of words.
Haha I bought those tights… Wish I hadn't.Did you by any chance read Childhood Flames at the time? It's quite like her style and I was influenced a lot by it at the time too.
haha great post x
I am so bad at sticking to lists! It's a good thing I don't make them that often. I do have the occasional "what the hell was I thinking" when I look back at some of my outfits, but on the other hand I love seeing an item I have owned for many years still in rotation in my wardrobe. It's one of the many mysteries that I have yet to fully solve – what is it about certain items that makes me turn to them time and time again, whereas other things I fall in love with, I end up wanting to get rid of the next season? I'm getting better at it but I think solving that riddle would be more beneficial to me than writing up shopping lists every season.PS Sorry to hear you're having trouble with internet trolls! Don't let the bastards get you down! ;-)
Hilariously insightful post. I definitely ran through the white tank basic and beanie phase when my blog started in '09, as well. I find the tank useful for gym-time, and the slouchy, black beanie is now property of my boyfriend. Oh, self-reflection….P.S. That very moleskin planner is my life.
I really wish I had written some lists and kept them, it would be fun and kind of interesting to read and look back. Although it seems like I'm not very good at sticking to lists! Love the "Chanel-esque tights from Lindex – Why?" – I remember, they were everywhere!
- Ane Sunde: Oh no, egg-effekten skal man holde seg langt langt unna! Haha :p- BeLighter: :-)- Wendy Wong: Nothing to be embarrassed about, indeed. It's part of growing up, being a teenager.. still, it's fun looking back to have a good laugh. – Maja Piraja: Haha! They are nice for sure, but I think they can be very very hard to pull off.- angie: That doesn't sound like you at all! – Daniella: Oh yes, I've totally forgotten about her blog.. I was very influenced by her style for some reason, I remember she was very into draped, asymmetric clothes at that time.- Rachella: Thanks.- koko: Oh, I know what you mean! That's another code to crack; why some items end up being well-loved et cetera. You should try to write lists but don't stick to them.. just put them in a book and look at them 2 months later to see if you still want the items on your list. I'm glad I didn't purchase any of the items on my oldest list apart from the bowler hat. – Jessie: Haha!! Self-reflection is a good thing! Let's blame Alexander Wang, I guess that's why I don't like him today.. – Garderoben: I know, they were everywhere in Scandinavia. I never got my hands on them though but I'm happy I didn't as I can't imagine myself wearing them. I would most likely try them on 100 times but never wear them out.
It's good if you can laugh at lists you made, it gets worse if you look at clothes you purchased months ago and wonder 'why?' – then it's not that funny. The rule think-twice-before-you-buy should be written in comic sans bold on each price tag.
I tried to remember some of the things I craved that I would find embarrassing now, but I think I've blocked them from my mind, hahaha. I shall have to go root around my closet to jog my memory. Thanks for sharing….I agree it's all part of growing up to try all kinds of stuff.
i would TOTALLY take those slouchy white tank tops off your hands.. just saying.. they are my basic staple :) my email is georgiapyle@mac.com if you're interested
