My love affair with burning fine candles has evidently been rekindled as of late. It seems like luxury scented candles are amongst the things that have a durable power to cheer me up, clear my mind, and re-energize me – especially after an exam and massive doses of required reading for an entire week. Right now, my favorite fine candle to burn is True Grace’s Moroccan Rose (a gift from one of my best friends, thank you). The essence of the Moroccan Rose candle has an intensely floral rose scent with woody base tones. It’s a wallet-friendly alternative to candles from Diptyque, Byredo, etc. I also adore the candles from A.P.C. and the No. 5 Feuille de Figuier is the next one I’m going to purchase.
Truth be told, I don’t feel bad about finding pleasure in material objects as long as it’s practiced in moderation – and there’s nothing wrong with materialistic pleasure either. Anyhow, I have no plans to become an ascetic.
However, there’s still one thing that has to be done so as to clear my mind; I need to reorganize and declutter my closet while listening to my favorite violin concertos. It’s really high time for de-stress therapy.
I'm obsessed with candles too! I burn them every evening when taking a shower and that's my de-stress for the night. I'm especially fond of soy based candles, as they're supposedly less harmful than wax candles. xxA Journey to Style
I too adore scented candles, I usually get a Diptyque one for birthdays etc and I find I now really associate the different scents with different periods in my life.herribbonsandherbows.blogspot.com/
I'm not a candle person, I don't even know how to work a lighter. Crazy but true!!Going off on a tangent, I find joy out of useful or soul-stirring things. I went to h&m today…I'm always underwhelmed by the merchandise and overwhelmed by the atmosphere. I didn't derive any pleasure from looking at their iffy quality or overly trendy stuff. Yet I walked out of my tailor's shop with a spring in my step because I dropped off my McQueen dress. In the long run I know I will derive more joy out of finally being able to wear that dress than some extraneous $9.95 top that I don't need.
I love candles to set a mood. Always have. I adore Aveda candles, especially Caribbean Therapy.
I missed your posts. I am not really a candle person, I try to light some whenever I remember of I want to relax and calm down but most of the time I seem to forget. How funny, I just saved this exact photo on my computer today http://adieu-tristesse.tumblr.com/post/3745128054.I am looking forward to more of your posts about style, I like reading your thought regarding other things like this as well. Sorry about my random ramblings, I have a very boring evening :D
I love candles but I'm too scared to actually buy any in case I burn my flat down somehow..but I want to finish a diptyque or apc candle so I can use it like this http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ldkanw9gxT1qcgrj0o1_500.jpg
- Alexandra: Me too! I also think that's what candles are for. – Pret a Porter P: Haha, lighters are tricky until you start using them several times a day. And I so agree with you. Sometimes I walk into fast fashion stores only to assure myself that I made a good decision when I jumped off the bandwagon a long time ago.- TJP: The Aveda candle sounds amazing. Aveda make good products and I didn't know that they also make candles!- Meri: One thing I don't like about my readers is that they always apologize for long comments. DON'T! I love getting your random ramblings :D I too seem to forget my candles because I always put them back in the candle box. And thank you for the kind words. :D- Alex: Haha, you're not going to burn down anything! Only the candle. And thank you for the inspiration. Lately I've been thinking of replacing the old mug I'm using to store my makeup brushes, but I just want something simple and nice and candle jars are just perfect!
the apc candle is so lovely, it's one of my faovurites! i also love their no.3 toumbac – it smells like tobacco and incense and it's totally manly and woody and strong. X
- hannah-rose: Ooh, i want to smell the no. 3.. but does it smell like you've been smoking indoors? Haha! I don't like that smell.
studerer du? hvis ja, hva?
The only diptyque I have is Jasmin, but it smells like real jasmine – and it suffuses the room with the subtle scent even when I am not burning it (super!) I bought it in their original store (37 Boulevard Saint-Germain) and it is such a charming little store as well. x
I also really like the APC toumbac candle, it's my favorite of the APC candles. To me it smells a bit sweet, like when someone smokes cloves. I didn't realize they were so expensive … when they were first introduced, the stores were giving them away with every purchase, which is why I even have any at all.
I really ought to give this a proper try; I'm always paranoid about the idea that it's a fire hazard. I got a Diptyique candle (Cypres) from my aunt who received it as a gift but had no interest in such things. It's a bit citrus-y for me, but it was very pleasant, like being in a spa, to have a scented room. I had bottle of room spray from Shanghai Tang years ago, it was very nice but the scent definitely lingers better with a burning candle. Sitting in a room with a candle listening to violin concertos sounds so luxurious.
- krna: Litt av hvert- K: That's what I like about candles, that the scent lingers in the room. I have only visited the Diptyque store in rue de francs bourgeois. It was packed with Japanese people so I didn't really have the chance to check out the candles. They are almost the double price here in Norway..- S: I'm really really curious about the smell. It sounds so weird that tobacco can smell that good. I didn't know that they used to give those candles away for free. Oh well, at least they are budget-friendlier than the ones from Dyptique.- lin: I place my candles on the window sill, and I don't have curtains (I don't like curtains + the room's acoustics are better without curtains especially for musicians) so I don't need to worry about fire. I agree, the scent does linger better with a burning candle and even when it's not burning. My room spray from A.P.C. disappears after a couple of minutes, that's why I want the fig candle.
i looove scented candles!x
That detox session seriously sounds like a plan… Throw out some of your fave conciertos. The violin's music is my most favorite sound. P.S. http://www.cocokouture.com/lifestyleandfitness/travel/2011/03/traveling-in-style-how-to-rock-the-runway-at-the-airport/That French Girl post was brilliant of you to post. Sartorial issues of the 80s are relevant to today, evidently.
i've known about diptyque candles for a while now, but have been too cheap to get any! haha. but in college when i was a moody smoker i'd buy tons of candles (definitely not the sophisticated scented ones!) and always have one lit whilst i did my writing or work late at night. it lent a nice air of romanticism to my dorm room and masked a little bit the cigarette smoke! :)
baies by diptyque is my favourite…although the price point is (as you point out) quite high.
Diptyque candles are amazing. I also like Tocca candles. At the moment, I am going through a sandalwood incense phase – bought a big box from this shop in Delhi that's hundreds of years old. The incense is incredible, and I love the ritual of lighting it in the evenings.
Amen, sister!XOXO-La Copine=)
I adore candles but I've only gotten into them as of late. It's such a nice way to wind down after a long day. I'm saving my Diptyque Baies for special occasions so in the meantime I have soy candles from Pacifica. My favourite is Persian Rose. I'm planning on splurging for a Cire Trudon or Jo Malone candle next.
Figuier by diptyque is my favourite… ! =)
Absolutely adore this image. At the end of the day, I simply can't relax unless a room is tidy, has a bunch of fresh flowers (at the moment I'm deriving huge pleasure from bunches of fragrant johnquils bought from the farmers market each week, and dotted about every room), and a cluster of gorgeous candles burning softly. I don't know whether it's the gentle, golden flickering light, or the comfort of their warm scent, but they are so relaxing. I love Diptyque of course, but find it's almost just as good to buy one and just leave it unburnt in my room (it fragrances the room even when you're not burning it), and buy slightly cheaper ones to burn on a nightly basis. I collect them everywhere I go, but also love MOR (a lovely Australian brand) and the Bailey's, which I buy at Liberty in London and which come in lovely, unusual scents (thyme, mown grass, burnt fig, etc.) http://www.liberty.co.uk/fcp/product/Liberty//Jasmine-Scented-Candle,-Baileys/33982And is there anything more cathartic than putting on your favourite music and having a good wardrobe purge/organisation evening? I love doing mine to Marvin Gaye or Nouvelle Vague (and a pile of candles, obviously)Briony xxhttp://agirlastyle.com
i have one which reminds me of freshly washed laundry – sounds odd but i wish id bought more. scented candles and scent in general has such a transportive qualityi agree with you on decluttering – it just gives me a sense of peacefullness/calm to be faced with visual and underlying order. ive already started a big project of tackling my flat – it wont be fun, but i can visualise the results, and cant wait to see it in reality. good luck!Son
Diptyque candles have become my firm favourites. I tend not to buy any others because I'm not sure Diptyque can be topped for me! I think the reason behind my apparent fierce loyalty it that the frangrance when they burn never smells synthetic or overly perfumed and sickly – it is always just right. My favourites vary with the time of year and where I am. At home is it Baies in the winter, Mimosa for the Summer. On hot summer holidays away it's Figuier, and cold winter ones, Oranger. It's become a bit of a rule now to take a mini one when I go away – it sounds very OTT and but it really makes any room feel like home and somewhere special. To some a materialistic pleasure perhaps? But for me, for those special times, it's just so lovely. x
What is you favourite violin concertos?
Beautiful candles.. now will you please help me sort out my wardrobe too?! x
haha… rekindled. :)
The look so beautiful, burned down like that. I've only ever seen them in pristine condition on the glossy pages of a magazine and, truth be told, I wasn't interested. Seeing your luxury candles like this, used and enjoyed, makes me want to try them!
i love candles! i'm quite particular about quality and scent. i think one of the boutiques here sells diptyque; i always forget to check. aveda makes the most lovely scented candles. there's one called rainforest- which to me smells nothing like the rainforests i've visited but still the scent is heavenly.by the way, i completely agree with you about deriving pleasure from material things, if in moderation. i've felt the same my whole life, unapologetically. :)
I have a Diptyque Jasmine candle which I was given two years ago at Christmas, my boyfriend balks at the cost of these candles but it's still got plenty of life in it and I find the way it has slightly discoloured quite charming.I was just given a Diptyque Tubereuse candle for my 22nd birthday, it was, I think, the only thing I asked for. I'm in my final year of university and having it burning on my desk while I try to write my dissertation gives me a refreshing burst of clarity and relaxation. It smells beautiful.
These candles often smell so nice:)Greetings from Norway, and have a great day!
Thank you for the comments!!- Jessie: I'm glad you enjoyed it! – miss sophie: Haha, I too am a bit too stingy to get one! But I will get one sooner or later.. maybe for my birthday as I just can't justify spending so much money on a candle right now (they are 2 x the price in Norway, but much cheaper in France or in America..). Haha, what a nice little anecdote!- Ammu: Ah, that sounds so lovely. I'm a bit sensitive to incense, unfortunately! – LL: I absolutely agree with you. If you ever try the candles from Jo Malone, let me know what you think!- Briony: Oh, you make your evenings sound very romantic. I can only imagine! Candles are indeed relaxing. I burnt a scented candle while I showered today and the whole grooming routine was completely different. I love the calming air the candles provide. Oh, I used to be obsessed with Nouvelle Vague a couple of years ago!!- Son: Wow, your flat!! Good luck.. I don't even manage to tackle my room.. it seems like things are constantly accumulating in my room, I don't even know how.- MyFavouriteThings: Du får skaffe deg noen når du er i Oslo eller i utlandet. Ikea, haha. Jeg er egentlig ganske sensitiv mot lukt!- Olivia: I completely understand what you mean about the scent. I am very sensitive to scents but the luxury scented candles are just relaxing and they never give me headaches as opposed to candles from Ikea, for instance. And I like that you bring a candle whenever you go away.. I'd probably do the same if I could afford a lot of Diptyque candles!- Minka: D major op. 35 by Tchaikovsky, E minor op. 64 by Mendelssohn, D major op. 19 by Prokofiev, A minor Op. 82 by Glazunov, I love both A major and D minor by Brahms.. but my all-time favorites are Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn.. they have a special place in my heart. I often cry when I listen to Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn's violin concertos, they are achingly beautiful. People who do not listen to classical music, because they think it's too old-fashioned, are missing out on the most incredible music ever. It's not a matter of taste, classical music IS quality music as opposed to the crap nowadays. – laura emily: Yes!- MarieP: I agree with you. It's the same with clothes.. they only get better the more you wear them.- style odyssey: Oh, I want to try the Aveda candles that you and TJP talk about, but I don't think I can get them here in Norway.- Meg: Yes yes, it's such a good idea to have it burning on your desk while you're writing. You'll most likely derive a lot of inspiration from it, mentally.
Hi Fleurette!I have been meaning to ask you about your Dicker Boots. I managed to find a pair in my size and were about to purchase them, but held off. I managed to have the sales lady hold them for me until tomorrow. Do you wear yours to death? I have been thinking about these for ages, but wary that the style will become too popular withstand the test of time. Let me know your two cents! All best,Geneivieve
- Geneivieve: You should get them if you really like them. I wear mine to death and having those boots makes it harder to wear any of my other shoes.. I simply can't part with those shoes (apart from during winter when I'm forced to put away my shoes). I don't like it when things I wear become trendy or very popular :-(
it's true. candles are so very relaxing. and luxury candles cannot be compared to.
pretty! candles are very relaxing!http://chicdisplay.blogspot.com/
Du har helt rett! Favoritten min er Fleur d’orange fra A.P.C.
There is a sense of real luxury going through your blog that I realy enjoy and which is somehow so inspirational!Things like lace underwear or candles or nailpolish that is special for you define your signature style and gave me inspiration to search for little details to define my own.
Oh, how I adore Diptyque candles. There's something about the aesthetic of the logo and graphics that I love, and not to mention that they smell fantastic. This is unrelated, but I'm curious about your answer:What are your thoughts on the fashion industry? Is it one in which you could ever see yourself working?
- angie: Oh, thank you very much for your kind-hearted words. I found out that things like those you mentioned are nice ways to add a hint of luxury into my day to day life. I rarely look forward to the next day because I know it's just a repetition of the other days.. but when I can spice it up with luxury scented candles or something that feels luxury, the day gets a better ending. – Jane: I know! Even when you've burnt the candle, you can still use the jar because the graphics are so nice. Regarding the fashion industry, I have answered a lot of questions about it a while back (my formspring). Fashion is not something I could work with – it's too superficial and I don't like the fashion industry. It's the last thing on my list of industries/professions Personally, fashion is just frivolity. I myself am heading in the direction of medicine and science.
I also love candles! I splurged at Diptyque in Paris and bought the Feu de Bois candle to remember my time there and it is truly one of the most luxurious things I own. I'll have to check out A.P.C candles too, they sound just as amazing
UPDATE: Dearest Fleurette:I purchased the shoes and was skipping all through New York City in them all day today as happy as a bee. I do adore them. Now learned that there is a huge difference between popular as in trendy and popular as in eternally classic. And the dickers belong to the latter category. Thanks for the extra encouragement!!xoxo,Geneivieve
I think everyone likes candles. However, I'd never tell my husband I pay over $80 for each one! lol!p.s. I got my boots on ebay. I just got really lucky. The seller had bought them a day before and was planning on stretching them because they were a bit too small for her but then decided not to do it. I even got the receipt and everything! p.p.s. Thanks again for trying to help me find them! If you ever need anything from the US, I'm your girl!
