Style talk on a sunday

When I feel slightly uninspired, I like to make utilitarian ensembles of clothing to remind myself of what I’m striving for in terms of style. Creating these ensembles also gives me a general idea of what I like or dislike. It’s quite distinct that I like a sort of consistency in a wardrobe and accessories. Once I’ve found something that suits my taste and body perfectly, be it a piece of clothing or a color, I’ll stick to it. For instance, I only wear the nail polish color ‘rouge noir’ as it is part of my uniform look. Any other nail polish color would be completely wrong.

  1. Is that first coat Rachel Comey? It must be; she reads my mind in terms of coat perfection every time. I'm glad your hiatus appears to have been brief. Did you get everything done that you wanted to? I understand having to concede to academic pressures. My fledgeling blog is being sadly neglected in favour of my literature dissertation.

  2. Aesthetic Alterations: Wow! impressive. I don't own any tights from Falke yet but I will soon.Kate: The first coat is from Vanessa Bruno. I love the removable shearling collar. The coat looks gorgeous without the collar as well. Hiatus for 19 days didn't feel that long. I didn't get everything done, I felt down in the dumps most of the time :S. Tell me about your dissertation, what are you writing about?

  3. Dear Fleurette,I LOVE both outfits and the silhouettes. You're such an inspiration. It's always a pleasure to visit your blog because you share so many wonderful insights. I happened to read the formspring comment about you're copying the blog Vanilla Scented, that seemed to offend you. What a ridiculous statement! I just wanted to say that your blog is nothing like hers. So far, I haven't spotted any vulgar photos of yourself or lousy writings on your blog. Keep up with the good work and do not let such comments upset you. :)- Louise

  4. The thing you have with nail polish is something I have with perfume. I always stick to one scent because if I'd used any other in between it wouldn't feel like 'me'.How did your exams go?

  5. Thank you for the comments!Louise: Thank you, I agree I found that comment a bit off. My blog is a result of all the things and blogs that have been an inspiration to me, but vanillascented is sadly not amongst my sources of inspiration. Still, it's a good blog ;)Emilie: Joseph! It's perfect.Fashion tidbits: Omega, model: de ville pestige. Black sweater from T by Alexander Wang.Stephanie: Ah, I have not yet succeed in finding the right scent. Still searching for the one that suits me perfectly and that I can wear as a signature scent.. my own scent!!lc: Guiseppe Zanotti!Selina: Thanks. The watch if from Omega, model: de ville pestige. My dream watch!

  6. Du har en fantastisk jakkesmak! Særlig den første kåpen var nydelig.Nydelig.

  8. Your blog is a dream, your posts make my day – so refreshing to find a blogger who doesn't just buy whatever-item-is-in-style, wear it once and never mention it again (ahem, H&M, Topshop and Jeffrey Campbell!). Living in a fairly distant city on an island in the middle of an ocean, disposable fashion is all too common an attitude; I was starting to feel a little crazy being the only person who does not shop at chain stores or the like, but your blog makes me feel more at ease (and I even find myself thinking "What would Dead Fleurette do?" when trying to choose whether to buy something or not, haha!). Thank-you for being a distant fashion-kindred-spirit!May I make a small suggestion for some future post content? I think a wardrobe essential post would be wonderful – ten to twenty items necessary for the perfect minimal wardrobe :) I'd love to see your take on the 'capsule wardrobe'!(Oh, and a small hint – I read somewhere you were after a pair of Ferragamo Varas/Varinas? Check eBay – I recently got a pair of black Varas with a slight sturdy heel for $55! Some Topy soles from my cobbler and they're indistinguishable from a $550+ brand-new pair!)I wish you all the best in your wardrobe-quest, and sorry for the essay of a comment!

  9. I like the collage…very chic (can't go wrong with navy/black/breton tops!). I've found that now that I am closer to have a quality, pared-down wardrobe, I feel less stress when I walk into my closet. I think too many choices can be the antithesis of happiness (I mean, I would rather walk into an ice cream shop that had 2 really good flavors than one with 32 marginal ones). It took me a loooooooooong time to find my signature scent (which is Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere). I tried to force others, but none would stick. Now I *know* I have the right one because everyday when my little boys hug me, they tell me I smell like 'yummy mommy'. That's enough for me!I am so glad you are connecting with us again. xo

  10. Igjen – fantastisk.

  11. Fluerette:Love your collages! Do you mind identifying each piece and the website that you pulled from? I would love to locate some of the clothes.

  12. I love both of these!!!! especially the second, That Joseph skirt is perfect.I was wondering about your IM jacket, did you decide to keep it?

  13. I've just discovered your blog and I must say, I find it incredibly thoughtful, informative, and such a pleasure to read! Your fashion/life ethos is strikingly similar to my own. I look forward to frequenting this space regularly. Cheers!

  14. Thank you for the comments! You're all too kind!Koshka: Thank you very much! "What would Dead Fleurette do?" – I feel so honored, really! Thank you for the suggestion, I'd like to do it someday but what's stopping me from doing it is I don't know where to start. Regarding the Vara flats, I have been looking for them on eBay but the flats in my size turn out to be very worn. About the size, would you say they run small or big? Again, thanks for the lovely comment. It made my day, and I love long comments!TJP: I agree with you. Ever since I purged my wardrobe, my life has become somewhat simpler and less stressful (even though I'm constantly searching for perfect garments.. in the long run, this constant search will pay off!). "I mean, I would rather walk into an ice cream shop that had 2 really good flavors than one with 32 marginal ones" – perfect instance, I absolutely agree with you. Thanks for the anecdote of your scent. I think the reason why my mom haven't changed her scent in years is because I, my sisters and my dad think she only smells like mommy when she wears her scent. Jean: http://www.polyvore.com/winter_outfit/set?id=25862197 + http://www.polyvore.com/school/set?id=25862740Alex: Of course I kept the jacket! I've already worn it once. But I have a feeling that I will re-sell it once I've found the jacket without the zippers. :(Joanna: Thank you very much, and welcome to my blog. I love new readers :)

  15. I also recently just discovered your blog and I really admire it because it's such a different take from most fashion blogs. I really do love the concept of defining your own style and putting it visually (which is really cute pretty btw!). But don't you ever have days where you feel out of the ordinary or you want to do something different or extreme? What do you do then? I guess from reading your posts it made me wonder, do you ever break your own "fashion" rules?Love your blog though. :)

  16. In response to Louise, is it fair to say that Vanillascented's photos are vulgar? Her photos are sensual and she's comfortable expressing her femininity. Dead Fleurette's photos and style are more androgynous and formulaic. But there's nothing wrong with either.

  17. Just wanted to drop a note and let you know that I, like the many other commenters, am a HUGE fan. I re-read your blog entries as encouragement to not be a wasteful spender. And even though the new year isn't here yet, I have already decided to make a 2011 resolution to filter my closet and be a more selective fashion consumer. Your writing style is lovely and I feel quite lucky to have stumbled onto your blog. Please never stop blogging.

  18. Bonjour!I've red so many comments before writing mine – and I don't know what to say more. You're amazing and I just want to say thank you for being an inspiration for me.

  20. muus: Bator. But the etoile version is called Baki, and the long version is called Ben.cassielouise: Thank you for the comment. As for the days, I don't have days where I feel an urge to do something extreme. Well, I did get a hair cut on saturday, which is extreme enough for me. I find something very peaceful about the way I am acting in terms of style and fashion. I don't think I have any fashion rules besides consuming rules. But I don't consider them as rules, just habits. For instance, I don't need a rule that says that I can't wear the Lita boots from Jeffrey Campbell.. I know what I like and dislike, I know that I'd never wear those boots regardless. haha! Anonymous: I don't mind being formulaic. I rather dress that way than dressing flamboyantly.. I don't have or feel the urge to be flamboyant or controversial especially because I can be remarkable in other (more significant) ways, be it my grades or talent in music. I only care about clothes to a certain extent. I don't think of dressing/style as a way to disguise the unremarkable person beneath a pile of garments. Just saying, because you said that my style is formulaic. ;-)Laura: Thank you for dropping that lovely note. I'll cheer for you and do update me on your progress, I am curious!Veronique: Thank you, you're just too kind!!

  21. Hello again! About the Varas.. I'd say they're a little small, and it also depends on the width. I usually wear a 7-7.5, and I have average-width feet, but I took a gamble on a pair in "C" width (medium I think) in a size 8. They were comfortable but felt like they were going to fall off when I walked, even with insoles, so I asked my cobbler for some advice and he let me in on a little secret – fold the insole in half, and put it in the front of the shoe! They fit perfectly now. There are quite a few pairs on Etsy as well :) patience and persistence is key, you'll never know when someone decides to list a pair in the exact colour/width/size/price range you want :D good luck!

  22. I wish I was back in Europe for your winter purely so I too could don a military inspired double breasted trenchcoat and wool tapered trousers. Or maybe I could forgo the plane ticket and purchase that PS1 or Celine box bag instead. But until then, I've always got DF to read. Thank god.

  23. i just found your blog- it seems like my cup of tea, for we seem to have similar tastes. i'm in the midst of a huge but gradual wardrobe purge, as i recently moved back to the "real world"…which includes seasons (hooray!) and actual dressing (i lived in the tropics before, so most of my old wardrobe consisted of summery prints, island-friendly attire.) i'll keep up with your blog; you have good ideas and inspiration. as for rouge noir- i wore it back in the day when it was new and called "vamp" (which sadly is a whole different color now- confusing, no?) anyway, rouge noir is proving to be hard to come by these days, but what a gorgeous color it is! do you wear it in summer also? i still have an old bottle; i bought it on st barths many years ago. it's thickened a bit but i hold on to it in case i can't find it Stateside.

  24. thanks for your comment on my blog, here's my reply:i'm afraid that chanel rouge noir is getting harder to find stateside. maybe you'll have better luck where you are (norway?) you're right- such a classic color, i don't understand why it's not more readily available. and as for summer wear- i lived in the tropics and wore it on my toes year round, didn't matter to me because i love it, as you do.i prefer chanel to any other nail colour brand.

  25. dead fleurette i love you so much ! your blog is crazy !what is the name/brand of the black boots please?LOT OF KISS FROM MELISSA
