Fall wardrobe planning pt. II

(via creaturesofcomfort)

As my favorite month is approaching, I eventually managed to complete my ultimate list over the essentials I’m going to pursue this fall, hypothetically. Inspired by the “French method of dressing”, I’m allowing myself to indulge in five pieces or less, merely if I find the certain item irresistibly perfect as if it was tailored for my taste and figure. I’ve decided not to buy the striped mohair sweater from Isabel Marant, as mentioned in an earlier post, because I didn’t like the fabric.

Regardless, I’m still building my perfect wardrobe, i.e. I’m allowed to purchase a certain amount of important basics such as striped sailor tops, linen t-shirts, etc. I’ll be filling in the gaps as well as hunting for the essentials that lack in my wardrobe. Ashamedly, I don’t even own a black cardigan in good quality, a basic I need to get my hands on as soon as possible, because autumn equals layered clothing.

1) A pair of brogues or loafers
My obsession for menswear will never end. My favorite brogues are completely worn and filthy, and I absolutely need a new pair. I also lust for a pair of loafers from A.P.C. but I don’t know which color to choose. Brown or black? I love them both.

2) Isabel Marant tweed/bouclé jacket
Such a classic and chic piece. I usually love all the jackets from Isabel Marant.. but the problem is the availability. I always seem to miss out on every single jacket she creates.

3) Clutch from Balenciaga or Mulberry
The giant envelope clutch or Alexa clutch… not sure yet.

4) Black O-neck sweater
I’ve found an o-neck knit from Acne that looks perfect. Definitely an item I need to take a closer look at.

5) An intense, inexplicable desire or an item from Isabel Marant
“I find the most successful purchases are made when I simply give in to some intense, inexplicable desire. That’s how I find the mainstays of my wardrobe, the objects that give me joy to wear.  These I’ll end up wearing them again and again.  It’s when I try to consciously fill a hole in my wardrobe that I end up getting something that’s wrong or uninspired.”

Credit to notes to a mouse for this wonderfully written paragraph. Couldn’t say it better myself. That’s why I’d like to make room for an unpredictable item. Perhaps from Isabel Marant, because every single item I own from Isabel Marant was a result of an impulsive purchase or an intense, inexplicable desire. And these items are the most beloved in my wardrobe. It is as if Isabel Marant designs her clothes specifically for me.

Tell me, what’s your fall list so far?

  1. I go by the French Method of dressing, five pieces for the season [other then the basic basics I purchase/replace]. I've personally always found it to be a great and practical rule and I try and stick as closely as possibly to it. I love brogues, I recently bought a new pair as part of my list and I love them. Here is what I've been searching for this season:01. Grey loose crewneck jumper: Found, and love it! 02. Tan Oxford-Brogue: Found and love them03. Brown Riding Boots: Found [just not ordered] To replace old pair04. Saddle handbag: Colour, brown or black, I think. 05. Still undecided but probably will lean towards something more for the winter season and will be bought when I am in NYC for University.I like your list so far. Isabel Marant's tweed/bouclé jackets are always so gorgeous!

  2. Ha this list is so like my own, its untrue!I love the APC loafers in black. I also want a grey boucle jacket and a Balenciaga city in light grey. Do you find yours to be practical?Good luck with the search!

  3. oh i wish i planning for winter, i looove dressing in the colder months. i'm planning for summer right now and my list is simple – utility vest in an oatmeal, kind of like a safari jacket, (another) calf-length grey marle or jersey skirt, some oversized tee shirts in a variety of colours (maybe AA), an isabel marant sweater in a mustard colour, not very summery, but its in stores now haha! and the perfect pair of sandals. X

  4. I love the APC loafers as well, I didn't know you could get them in black…on the website they are only available in a very deep green and a redish brown

  5. Den listen liker jeg utrolig godt: vil ha alt det jeg og, hehe. Første punktet har jeg allerede anskaffet meg : et par sorte brouges fra Zara og et par loafers fra Etienne Aigner.

  6. I can't find a proper black cardigan either! I'm looking for a boyfriend cut in cotton. The simplest things are the hardest to find! I have “Iris Apfel syndrome” this year. Though I’m only stuck with 1 disappointing item (via ebay). Is that boucle jacket already part of your collection? I like the mix of the grey threads. My wish-list:For work: boyfriend cardis, navy riding jacket, navy cable sweater vest w/ gold buttons.Work clothes take precedence since the riding jacket plus a recent "inexplicable desire" item will have to make me cool the spending for awhile.Additional: black patent trench, chiffon trim arm warmers (frivolous but I think I could pull these off better than lace arm warmers), velvet tuxedo slippers, velvet tuxedo (though I'm on the fence about the color plus it would most likely require alterations.) Though I'm always on the look out for long black things, slim dark wash jeans, and a replacement for my shattered necklace, and disappeared into thin air ring.

  7. I want to invest in more wool leggings and perhaps a chunky knit sweater. I lived in Calgary, ALberta for the past 5 years so I'm pretty much stocked for any sort of fall weather already.

  8. Isabel Marant is a great "wardrobe building" designer. Unfortunately her things are quite pricey in the US, and I know of only 2 brick-and-mortar stores on the East Coast that carry her stuff.I only have 2 more things to go on my list – 1) a black tweed/nubby jacket (I've been looking at Junya Watanabe ones – like the kookier version of the classic Chanel) and 2) black leather shorts. I had a third on my list – Louboutin spiked-toe equestrian boots – but crossed them off after trying them on this weekend (I like to try shoes on so that come sale season I'll know which size to hunt down!)

  9. I couldn't agree more with what you say about that inexplicable desire – I find the same, I plan and I plan (and it helps me narrow down my desires) but in the end, I often surprise myself, and it's never disappointing. I like the element of surprise! At the moment, all I can think of for the autumn/winter season is to look at the work of Indian designers (I just moved back to India after 14 years away) and maybe pick up a crushed cotton/khadi dress or an embellished skirt or a pair of draped cotton trousers. And a handbag from Belen Echandia – their bags are beautifully made, with great leather, and the service is always so personal. That's about it. It's the shortest list I have ever made, I guess my wardrobe is pretty complete, after two years of buying very carefully!

  10. Hello readers. Thanks for sharing your lists with me.. :D So exciting!Miss Moll Cherie: Yes, I love my city.. but I don't wear it as often anymore because I always carry my mac to school, and it's to big and heavy for my city. On the other hand, I'm not so happy with the quality.. all the tassels have split… hannah-rose: perfect pair of sandals.. how about the sandals from A.P.C.? I looove them, so cute, versatile, childish and timeless.Alex: Oh, I know… i was referring to some other loafers in black.. haha. I highly regret that I didn't buy the brown loafers from A.P.C.'s previous collection.. I saw them in Paris but didn't want them at that time :SAngeli: Oh, må sjekke ut det merket! merci!pret a porter p: WORD! Acne carried the perfect black cardigan in cotton (boyfriend cut) last season.. I went to Acne today but they're not doing that kind of cardigan this season.. only wool-ish fabrics.. nookoko: Isabel marant is quite pricey here in Norway as well.. (25% tax.. uggh). but as I travel to Paris often, I usually buy her clothes there. Smart, I'm going to start trying on shoes I want I wait for the sale season! :DAmmu: Word. The things I plan usually disappoint me.. like.. the perfect white shirt turned out to be my worst nightmare. All the effort you've put into completing your wardrobe is so worth it.. I envy you :)

  13. Oh! I think blogs like yours (and my earlier love, Antique Gold Sphere) help me a lot in the process – I so appreciate the discussion, instead of just being sold a bunch of stuff in a magazine. Isabel Marant jackets are so great, aren't they – I bought a reversible one in cotton and lurex – the fastest shopping decision I ever made, and the most expensive item in my wardrobe, barring one BE bag in pewter. But SO worth it!

  14. Miss Moll Cherie: You can buy my light greige Balenciaga City (Greige 2006) if you'd like and don't mind a worn bag.. Let me know and I'll contact you! /T

  15. Ammu: Nice to hear.. speaking of AGS, do you read other blogs a la her dead blog? Agree. The reversible jacket is soo cool – not my style, but some people make that jacket work (apart from Miley Cyrus etc.. lol).
